Following the release of the Doctor Who Commander decks, there’s yet more content on the way. A brand new Secret Lair is set to introduce more Doctor Who-themed cards to MTG, and we’ve been given a first look at three out of the five cards in this exciting collection.
These newly revealed cards are not just any ordinary additions. They bring to life iconic characters from the Doctor Who universe: David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor, Neil Patrick Harris as the villainous Toymaker, and Yasmin Finney as the new companion, Rose Noble. These cards, along with two others that are eagerly awaited for next week’s reveal, form part of the “Secret Lair x Doctor Who: Regeneration” set, scheduled for release on the Secret Lair website on December 11.
Gavin Verhey, Principal Designer at Magic: The Gathering, shared insights into the creation and purpose of these new cards. The decision to feature them in a Secret Lair drop, rather than including them in the earlier Commander decks, was strategic. Verhey explained:
We were excited to include the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors as soon as we knew about them. The challenge was how to integrate these characters, which we knew little about, into the game without spoiling the upcoming specials. Secret Lair gave us the flexibility to do this at the right time, keeping the original decks intact and avoiding any premature reveals.
The Fourteenth Doctor card, in particular, has been a topic of much anticipation and speculation among fans. This card is unique as it’s the only Doctor represented in more than two colors, reflecting the character’s unusual nature in the show. Verhey elaborated
The concept of regeneration is central to Doctor Who, and we wanted to capture that essence in the game. We had initially played with the idea of using all the Doctors as a single commander, changing with each play. While this didn’t work out, it led us to the Fourteenth Doctor’s design. It allows players to use a fully-themed Doctor Who deck and play all five colors, opening up a myriad of storytelling possibilities. This card is tailor-made for fans looking for a true Doctor Who experience in MTG.
With the upcoming release of “Secret Lair x Doctor Who: Regeneration,” fans are eager to see how these new cards will shake up the game. The combination of iconic characters and innovative gameplay promises an exciting addition to the Magic: The Gathering universe. As the MTG community eagerly awaits the full reveal, one thing is clear: the worlds of Doctor Who and Magic: The Gathering continue to blend in ever-more creative and engaging ways.
